We are organizing this Dhol Tasha music competition to select groups who will perform at the 2024 BMM Convention, which is scheduled to occur in San Jose, California, from June 27th to June 30th, 2024. 

All Contestants in the BMM2024 Dhol Tasha competition are strongly encouraged to review the entire document to understand the rules and guidelines of the competition.

  • The competition is open to all Dhol Tasha groups across North America.
  • The competition consists of three rounds:
    • Round one: Open to all teams.
    • Round two and three: Five finalist teams will be performing live at the Convention.
    • Winner and Runner will be announced on the last day of the convention.
    • If the sufficient marks are not scored, the winner award will not be given.
  • Record and submit performances for round one by the due date.
  • Winners for each round will be determined by the Judge’s ranking, their decision is final.
  • All finalists who will be performing at the convention must register as attendees.
  • The minimum age for participants for this team event is 12 years.

  • The qualification video will ensure that competing teams are producing quality music that will represent the essence of marathi dhol tasha.
  • Participating teams can record a new video or use a video from the last two years (2022 and 2023).
  • At least five performers from the qualification video should be participating in the BMM 2024 Dhol Tasha Competition.
  • Qualification video maximum length is one minute.
  • Video should be with the original audio. 
  • Number of participants in the qualification video are limited to 20
  • Provide the URL link for your vocal video (e.g., YouTube or Google Drive link)
  • Record the video using a smartphone, DSLR camera, or any suitable video recording device.
  • Ensure recording quality is 720p or higher
  • Add the group name or logo on the video.
  • Ensure clear and audible sound quality.
  • Pay attention to the camera angle, with a well lit video.
  • Capture both the performer and instruments used in the video.
  • Videos with advertisements will not be accepted.
  • Submit one video per team.
  • Submit your performance videos by the deadline. Late submissions will not be accepted.
  • Please note that the qualification video will be property of BMM2024 and will be utilized as promotional material.
  • Many criteria will be applied by the panel of judges to evaluate a dhol tasha performance including the following key standards:
    • Adherence to time-limits
    • Quality
    • Creativity
    • The degree of difficulty
    • Fluency, grace, and flow
    • Synchronization
    • Expressions and emotions
    • Selection and clarity of the music
    • Audience connection
    • Connection with accompanists
    • Stage presence
    • Confidence
    • Costumes
    • Group coordination – e.g., formation and spacing for group performances
    • Use of stage
  • The judges’ decision will be final in all matters relating to the Dhol Tasha competition.
  • The scoresheet will be published at the end of round one and round three by an email to the participating teams by Mar 31, 2024 and Jul 15, 2024 correspondingly. 
  • BMM2024 will offer a standard equipment package to qualifying teams, comprising ten dhols, two tashas, and a Dwaj.
  • The dhols will come in three sizes: 27 inches, 25 inches, and 23 inches, with each team randomly receiving one dhol from each size category, totaling ten dhols. 
  • The tashas will be 10-chavi “Ganga Jamuna” type. Teams have the option to use the provided tashas by BMM or bring their own. 
  • Additionally, a saffron flag measuring two by five feet, along with a 12-feet flag pole, will be provided.
  • Each team can have a maximum of fifteen members for their performance. 
  • When submitting their entry, teams must provide a list of up to twenty potential participants. 
  • The final list of participants must be submitted by May 30th, 2024. Otherwise, only the first fifteen participants listed will be eligible to compete.
  • In Round Two, each team will engage in a jugalbandi, featuring four dhol players and one tasha player. They’ll recreate the beats played by a reference dhol tasha team.
  • Round Three is a team performance lasting 8 minutes. The curtain will close after the allotted time.
